I bought my 11yr old son a Walther P22 for his birthday and couldnt wait to give it to him, so I gave it to him today, 3 days early. This obviously lead to a trip to our gun range where I also got to fire my new Taurus Slim. The very first round out of the Walther was a fte, and I thought uh oh. Much to my delight it was followed by approx. 500 rounds without a flaw. The gun is pretty accurate and very easy for him to handle. He and I both were very pleased and needless to say he was very excited about owning his first handgun. I found the Slim to be very easy to handle and very accurate although it started out shooting about 5 inches low, but had a very nice group. With a little tweeking I quickly brought the tight little group up to the bullseye and left the range very satisfied with the performance of both guns.

I love to see father and son outings out to the gun range. I feel it is important to let them see and learn about firearms vs keeping them sheltered from them.

Amen, Bman. When my daughters were young both of them would go shooting with me. I recently started taking my three grand daughters (ages 7, 9, and 13) to the range with me before they moved back to New York.

I think that it is always a good idea to train them young.

Now that my son (now 24) has moved here to Cruces we go to the range together quite often. Yes, it is great to make it a family event! You have a very lucky son...he has a great dad!

Thanks Max. I want them (3 boys,13,11,8) all to be exposed to guns and get as much info and training as they can. Being "sheltered" as Bman said, I believe is far more dangerous than being exposed. I was very happy to see the thread about Va schools teaching firearms safety to K to 5, as I am a Va resident and my wife is a 5th grade teacher.
