I would like to take a moment and thank Scott and Samantha for taking their valuable time to drive here from Houston and share some of their vast knowledge with us. I was impressed with Scott's knowledge and passion from the very first conversation over dinner on Friday night. His perspective on personal defense surprised me a little considering he has been in law enforcement for close to 30 yrs. He is very aware that police are usually 2nd responders and it is up to the individual to provide protection for themselves and their family.

The class was very good and I think every student went away with a ton of information and some new techniques to add to their arsenal. I know I did. Scott told us before we started that he only taught techniques that were proven to work, he did not teach theory. Scott's teaching method was very thorough, he would explain what we were going to do and explain why it worked, he would then demonstrate the technique and then we would execute the drill. We were about 2/3's of the way through the class before I remembered the camera in the car so I apologize for the limited # of pictures but I hope Scott can add some other pics that Samantha took during the class.

There were several things that were taught that made an impression on me but one of the most enlightening was when Scott showed us how to clear a double-feed by locking back the slide then drop the magazine. This took the pressure off the magazine and made it easier to remove. He then made us do this with snap caps and spent brass. The twist on this was that your weak hand was injured and had to be behind your back. I am left handed and was shooting a glock 23. It seemed like it took 2 weeks to get the slide locked back with only my left hand (but I know it was only around 5 to 10 minutes). Once I got the slide locked back it was fairly easy to clear the weapon and install a new magazine and charge the weapon. For those of you who shoot a glock, try setting up a double feed (using spent brass and a snap cap) and then try to lock the slide back with just your left hand and using your sight on your belt. It is damn near impossible with a stock gun. I am ordering an extended slide release asap!!

For those of you who did not get to attend this class, Richard and Butch both took the class and I bet they will incorporate some of Scott's techniques in their training!

Here are some pics from the class:

Here is the other end of the line with Zack and Justin:

Scott is demonstrating a portion of the technique:

Here are some pictures from the personal defense part of the class. One thing that Scott told us that stuck in my mind, was the fact that if some one attacks you and you are carrying a weapon, concealed or open, then there is a weapon in the fight. If someone attacks you and they get their hands on your weapon you lose, so his defensive tactics were geared to create distance and time in order to allow you to access your weapon and they are very effective. I would love to spend more time learning his techniques because I saw a lot of value in them. We have also told Scott that we would love to have him out again to teach us more advanced techniques.

Scott chose Eric to assist him in the demonstration part of this exercise.

Again I hope Samantha will add some pictures to this thread. I was participating so I did not have a lot of time to take pictures.

I would like to thank everyone who made this possible and everyone who took time out of their holiday weekend to attend the class. If you did not get to attend this class, I think Scott and Samantha could be convinced to come again.

Scott (Blackdragon) has posted several great articles on this forum and I would like to validate them for you. After several hours of conversation with Scott, I can tell you that when he posts something on this forum he is sharing information that is valuable and proven. There are a lot of instructors in this field who learn from books and other instructors and then teach us what they were taught. This man has tested and used the techniques he teaches. He teaches civilians, law enforcement and military students and he believes in what he is teaching.

Just a note on the other side of this training: Scott was impressed with the level of training and knowledge of the students that attended the class. This is a pat on the back for Riclin Firearms training. Richard told me that this class validated the fact that he was teaching us the right things.

If you are going to carry a firearm please invest the time and money to get trained!

I'd be interested in some training if he comes down again. Sorry I missed this one.

We are going to stay in contact with him and try to get them to come and teach more of the self defense program that he has put together. He has a good concept and we want to learn more about it. He was talking about retiring from the police force around December and hopefully he will have more time then. When we get something set-up I will post it here and have Richard send it out to his email list.

Thank you all for the kindness you showed Samantha and myself. We enjoyed our short stay, and look forward to visiting again. A special thanks goes out to David, Sandra, and Richard for making it all come together.

Richard is providing the type of training that is equal to any that I have had the pleasure to be a part of. While there are some things we teach differently, we still teach the same things. David and Sandra provided support, and the up beat spirit that makes teaching a pleasure!

The guys, and gal(Sandra)that came out where "Top Notch" shooters, which made my job easier. Sadly, I wish I had prepared a more challenging program. However it appears that the students learned a few things, as did I. When we return, it is my hope to include program that will include live fire, movement using cover and concealment, defensive tactics, knife, club, and the use of that information with AirSoft to make it real. Real is where it is at, it is not often pretty, doesn't look scripted, but it gets the job done.

Thanks guys, we have even taken to looking into relocating in the New Mexico.
