I bought a used RIA M1911-A1 this weekend at the show in cruces. It's straight GI-Spec. Nothing fancy. But, I couldn't pass it up based on the price and condition. It's very lightly used. And show's no signs of wear on the bore.
I'll post a picture if you like but it's just a plain jane for now.
I need to order an ambi mag release and safety. What has everyone used website wise for parts? Anything that fits a basic GI-Colt or other brand will fit this gun. If you can please provide links.
Also I've been looking at some various holsters. What's the consensus concerning carring a full sized 1911? Slide holster?

So have you taken it out and given it a try yet? I took my Colt 1919 out to the range right after I left the show. I had taken a cleaning kit with me and took it apart, cleaned and oiled it...and then fired it! It shoots great!

I did. It shoots very well. I put a couple different types of ammo through it. No issues. I replaced the grips with traditional walnut ones.

That's great! I'm sure it looks a lot better now. Shoots well too, but we expected that. Did you try any hollow points?
Max
I think you will find it more than acceptable.
They are actually the only 1911 on the market that is anywhere near true military specification.
The Filipino's take their 45's seriously.

I tried all diff kinds of ammo and no issue what so ever.
Ya sam, I like it a lot. I figured out how to get the safety off during the draw. I think with a little practice it'll be good to go.

I am guessing you are drawing it with your left hand. How are you doing it? I have a RIA officers model with the beaver tail safety. Using my thumb to sweep around to the safety is awkward and slow. At some point I will put an Ambi safety on it if I can find a reliable one.

Great news Jizzle! When are we going to get together so I can try it out? You can also give my 1919 M1911 a try.
Max
Operating left handed the easiest way to disengage the safety is with the trigger finger

ya that's what i've been doing. I do it during the draw. it works out, i just need to smooth it out, but that's just practice. no biggie.

This is the only weekend I can do it for some time. The following weekend I am getting a hip replacement so I'll be out of commission for some time.

I will give you a call max.
I was out shooting today with a friend and he was sighting in his 30-06. He was zeroing it at 100 yards (not sure why he picked 100). But anyway I decided to pop off a couple rounds with the 1911 at 100 yards and used a trick that sam gave me a long time ago.
It took 6 shots to hit paper. I didn't hit the bullseye but, putting rounds on paper at 100 yards is good enough for me, and we are talking printer sized paper. good times.

Wow, not bad at all!
Years ago I used to shoot my Smith & Wesson model 29 (.44 magnum) at 100 yards, so I know how difficult that is. I was happy to hit the paper too!

Back to your original question, Brownells is where I get most all of my parts. Actually, Brownells is where I've gotten all my 1911 parts. If you don't want to order using the web site, give them a call. Their customer service has always been excellent. http://www.brownells.com/
