They may let us keep our guns, but what is stopping them from taking the ammo?

I don't think this is anything to worry about. The article says (rightly so) that the EPA is barred by statue from controlling ammunition. Sure, they are going to try, but I don't think it will happen.

I do think though that government agencies such as the EPA are overstepping their authority, and Congress should get a handle on them by de-funding them.

This is not new, lead free ammo I mean. Normally this means the Lead Styphnate residue from the primer which is a breathing hazard particularly in a poorly ventilated firing range. One would hope that the EPA of all people would know what is really toxic and what is not so toxic. The ammo industry has been searching for years for a viable replacement for lead styphnate primers. Recently, a new candidate which originally had moisture stability problems has proved to be a viable candidate. It is diazo-dinitro-phenol, commonly known as DDNP or "dinol." Of course there are problems associated with it, primarily for reloaders. I may address this more in the Guide thread.

Lead bullets, and elemental lead is not notably toxic, outside of being shot or water transport pipes. Unfortunately, these days one can only expect the EPA to attack lead and ignore the true toxic, lead styphnate. Our government seems to become more idiotic every day. Since the ammo industry has not ignored the true hazard, I still believe facts will prevail over the morons, no matter how stupid. illegitimate, and forceful they become.

They EPA has denied the petition. So this is a mute point now. I am just amazed at what is being done behind the scene to make owning a firearm so expensive, and after the Government action of placing a GPS transmitter on your vehicle in your driveway without a warrant was upheld as legal. I am not surprised that this petition may have been acted upon.
In the event of a disaster the Governor (NM) can prohibit you from carrying a firearm in public. I figure that this is where you would need it.

EPA DENIES AMMO BAN PETTITION

This is from a just-released message from the NRA:

"Responding to a grassroots outcry from gun owners, the Environmental Protection Agency today announced that it has denied a petition by the Center for Biological Diversity and other radical groups that had sought to ban the use of lead in ammunition.

Agreeing with the position of the NRA and the firearms industry, the agency explained in a news release that it "does not have the legal authority to regulate this type of product under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA)." Further crushing the hopes of anti-gun and anti-hunting activists, the release added: "nor is the agency seeking such authority.""
