For the moment, truth trumps fraud... barely.

The Supreme Court (District of Columbia Et al. v. Heller) holds in part:

The Second Amendment protects an individual right to possess a firearm unconnected with service in a militia, and to use that arm for traditionally lawful purposes, such as self-defense within the home.

Read the Court's opinion (and dissents) (http://www.guncite.com/heller.pdf).

Like most people, I used to believe the 2nd Ammendment gives us the right to "Keep and Bear Arms." Now, I don't believe that at all. The Bill of Rights do not "grant" us any rights at all. It lists the rights we automatically have as a free people. The Bill of Rights along with the rest of the Constitution places limits on what the government can do. The 2nd Ammendment simply states that the government cannot infringe on a right that we already have (even though they do it all the time.)

It also implies personal responsibility with the phrase "A well regulated militia..." In those days, well regulated translated to well trained. It didn't mandate training but every militia member, which included every able-bodied male over the age of 16, was expected to be well trained (I know, a little sexism going on back then.)

PPK - all I would suggest is to remain believing in what the purpose of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights were written for. I think that one of the major issues in this country today is the growing number of people who believe that those pieces of paper are relics and not to be counted in todays US.

Many many people have fought and died to protect those rights - please do not give up on them or we as a country will have sacrificed many for nothing.

Go to Heritage. org They will send you a copy of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights at no charge, not even postage. You can order more copies for $1 per copy min. of 10 copies, you can do as i did and give copies to you friends as gifts. When you get your copy, you can open it up and be reminded as to what this country is all about. Every person who has ever served this country as a public servant, military or what ever took and oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States. I do not remember ever being de-oathed. That oath will be with me the rest of my life. SO HELP ME GOD!
