Upon retiring from the Air Force as a First Sergeant, I was hired by the Miami County Sheriff's Dept., Peru. Indiana. In 1973 when I was hired, there was only a Sheriff and Two (2) Deputies. I made the third Deputy, and we stayed at that level until 1976. We covered 640 square miles, 24-7. When I retired in 1994 as a Sergeant, we had 16 Merit Deputies, 2 Detectives, 10 Jailers, 1 Civil Process Server, 1 Transport Officer, 6 Dispatchers, 2 Office Personnel, 3 Cooks. The area around here is mainly farming, soy beans, corn, cattle, and large hog barns, etc. We have Grissom AFB, Miami Correctional Facility, a state minimum prison and medical facility for all prisons in Indiana. Two major highways, US 31 runs north and south and US 24 runs east an west thru the county. A Merit Deputy is hired by the Sheriff’s Merit Board and has to complete a 18 week course at the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy before he can perform the duties of a Law Enforcement Officer. I worked Traffic, Domestic, Theft, Warrants, Court Duty, Murder, I had several out of state transports, Kentucky, North Carolina. New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, I worked security for Country Singers: Earnest Tubb, Freddie Hart, Sylvia, Billy Crash Craddock, Merle Kilgore, Cal Smith, Bobby and Donnie The Osborn Brothers, Kenny Baker. I had a story write up for a murder that I worked in True Detective Magazine. I was the Law Enforcement Officer of the Year 1987 by the VFW.

Oh I forgot to mention that we also have the Mississinewa Lake in our county. It has a dam with a fishing outlet, a state forest, camp grounds, a large beach and several boat slips. Beach duty is really rough but some one has to do it.

Sorry Bman, I made a mistake. It was your Uncle that was a Lt. on the Alamogordo Police Dept.
