Ever since I saw someone shoot an LCR at my CCW course in September, I've been wanting to pick one up as my first revolver and as a truck gun, hiking gun and any other time when I want to carry but don't want to carry my G23. I did get to dry fire the one from the class a few times and it has an EXCELLENT trigger, I was very impressed with that!

Living in Cloudcroft, hiking up here and driving to/from work at Sunspot, I do have to deal with the occasional bear or mountain lion encounter so I'm starting to feel as though I want to carry ALL the time while I'm up here. And sometimes carrying my G23 isn't an option due to its size and my small frame size.

The more research I'm doing, it's a great little revolver. I'm now at a crossroads between getting the .357mag or the .38spl version of it. I've never shot either caliber, but plan on using it as a serious self-defense gun not for just target practice. So on that note, I'm sure I could handle the recoil of either if I needed to.

I like the idea of being able to shoot 2 types out of 1 pistol, and the .357mag version would make shooting .38spl+P a little easier because of the heavier weight. But I'm hearing that just shooting .38spl+P's out of the .38spl version is can be a little uncontrollable in and of itself.

Even if I got the .357mag version and shot .357mag once and decided it's too much, I'd still be able to shoot .38spl without a problem (and it's still lighter than the S&W airweights if I recall correctly). But if I got the .38spl version and decided the recoil is nothing to complain about, I'd never be able to shoot .357mag out of it. For this reason, I'm leaning towards the .357mag version. Plus I've heard there's a "medium" loaded .357mag for practice/self-defense that is less than a full .357mag but still more than a .38spl+P.

So, what do you all think? Opinions? Reviews? Suggestions?

According to the Ruger web site, both LCR's weigh the same, are the same size, and, unless you choose the night sights or crimson trace grips, which are only available on the 38, they're even the same price. So, with one you get 38 or 357 mag., and with the other, you get..........hey, is this a trick question?

Not sure what ruger website you're going to... lol

LCR-XS 5405 .38 Special Hogue® Tamer™ XS® Standard Dot Tritium 1.28" 13.50 oz. $575.00
KLCR-357 5450 .357 Mag. Hogue® Tamer™ Replaceable, Pinned Ramp 1.28" 17.10 oz. $575.00
LCR 5401 .38 Special Hogue® Tamer™ Replaceable, Pinned Ramp 1.28" 13.50 oz. $525.00
LCR-LG 5402 .38 Special Crimson Trace® Lasergrips® Replaceable, Pinned Ramp 1.31" 13.00 oz. $792.00

Reassures my own memory, I was thinking that the .357 version was about 4oz heavier. But I do believe they are the same size.

OK, I'll have to take back that one I guess :o, but I'm staying with my point, for the differences, were it me, I would take the 357 mag. Just my opinion.

Ha, thanks and no worries, just giving you a hard time. The more I'm thinking about it, the more I think the .357mag version WOULD be the best version to get. 4oz is nothing in the grand scheme of things.
