Once I heard a guy say that you should shoot your defense handgun once or twice WITHOUT hearing protection so that when you run into the bad guy and shoot the noise wont hinder your skills. I always use my hearing protection but has anyone ever done this ? Seems a little crazy to me but to each his own.

Adrenaline will take care of you not noticing the gun blast. That guy is asking for hearing problems.

I have done it that way and its not all that good of an idea but I still enjoy the sound of unmuffeled blast or two ,I dont do it all that often and only one or two rounds just for fun

I agree with Jizzle. I think the adrenaline will take over.

May hearing is bad enough as it is, not looking to make it any worse. I would have to agree, the adrenaline will make the noise alomost unnoticed

Yep, I am sure you guys are right. No need to ruin the ears.

and if you've ever shot without hearing protection you know it's not something you would enjoy repeating on a regular basis. The first time i did was the last time. My ears rang for 2 days.

Huh! - guess that goes to my having pulled the trigger in tight quarters, vehicles and in the open. Strange thing is I got a good report card on the hearing test at my physical two months ago.

In most of my previous lifes work, hearing protection would get you killed. Guess I'm just one of the luck ones to have no hearing damage.

Descreet, was the adrenaline pumping when you took those shots? If so, your body probably blocked out he noise. And still having a good hearing check is just what you said, luck. One of the guys I work with has been working around aircraft for 3 years less than me. My hearing is still good, and he is legally deaf now; being medically retired from the AF after only 5 years service because he is "unable to perform his job"

a buddy of mine is in s a similair boat. he is still in the AF but, not allowed to work on A/C. He's riding a desk now. He's only been in about 4 years i think. He's an A1C. But, however I do think he shoots quite a bit. Not always with hearing protection either. it's bad for ur health.

Most of my shots in combat have involved no adrenalina at all. I have had a few that did but mostly when the surprise wasn't on my side.
