I wanted to get the mental juices flowing so to speak.

Why do you OC rather than CC?

or

Why do you CC rather than OC?

Btw excuse my spelling errors in the poll. I failed to proof read prior to posting. :( Also you can pick as many choices as applicable. You arn't limited to 1.

I'm not trying to start any OC is better than CC or vice versa arguments. I just wanted to hear the reasoning behind each choice as each person sees it.

Well here is my opinion. I think that CC is better, that way the bad guy doesn't know to shoot you first. Once you are shot he can continue on with the rest of his plans (crime) if he can see that you are armed before he acts. Also, it is sad but many people are afraid of guns. I am afraid not to have a gun. Last, I dont want fifty thousand questions about why I have a gun and what I am going to do. Just a few things I think about.

Do you feel that if you CC you have a greater/equal/lesser chance of being attacked than someone who is OCing?

I think the chance is slightly higher. For example, I am going to rob a gas station. I come in and see a customer with a gun on his waist. I will shoot him becasue I dont want to be shot and I dont want this citizen to stop my robbery in process. If I dont see any threat, just helpless people I wont even bother. When a bad guy has a gun he doesnt think anybody is going to get in his way. Most of the people in the population dont have guns on their person. They dont want to be shot so they comply. If he KNOWS you have a gun you are a threat to the bad guy.

While there are a few times when I believe OC is prudent I do not believe it makes sense to advertise. In this day of widespread violence I carry to protect myself - not to give the bad guys the knowledge that I am carrying their next target of opportunity.

Sorry - just don't buy-in to the OC from a personal view but appreciate everyone's varried opinions.

When out in the field hunting with bow or rifle I OC a S&W 686 loaded with the hottest 357 corbon I can buy.

i carry to protect myself too. i'd rather he not attack me at all than initiate an attack and me successfully defend myself. Let him attack someone else who isn't armed or doesn't appear to be armed. I don't want to deal with the lawsuit or possible jail time that may or may not be associated with the situation.

Can anyone cite a link to a news story or other documentation of an example of a criminal seeing an armed citizen and taking him out first? it's only my opinion but, a criminal is normally of rather weak constitution and would rather avoid the situation at all costs and move on rather than face it. as far as the gas station scenario having a gun or not/carry preference isn't nessesarily going to save your life. Guns are just tools like anything else. What's going to save your life is your situational awareness. I've said it a lot of times, you can't defend yourself against a threat of which you are not aware. And yes, I do understand that if you CC you might be afforded a few extra seconds of time in which the BG makes himself known in which you can transfer from "white" straight to "orange" or "red" and skip "yellow" completely (BTW for info/definition of the color codes just wiki Jeff Cooper). But, if you where keeping your head on a swivel you probably already transfered to orange when the guy walked in and thought to yourself, "hmm I might have to shoot HIM today". At least i hope so. there are an infinite amount of possibilities and anything can happen.

I'm no expert. I've done some scenario based training and I really enjoy it. I would like to do more and I'd like to think that I can always keep my head on a swivel and recognize the BG quick, fast and in a hurry. But, I can't promise you anything.

my .02 cents.
