What are the actual no crap rules that govern concealed carry regarding "imprinting" so to speak? if my skinny a** wanted to conceal a full sized 1911 and you could readily see the imprint is that illegal or legal? and what else might i be missing?

Not quite sure how imprinting works with the law.

if you CC you are required to keep your gun concealed until you are feel you or someone else is in physical danger correct? i was just curious if you see someone with an obvious imprint if the gun is still legally concealed. or if i wore a shirt with an arrow pointing to where my gun is hidden if it still legally concealed. I'm not planning on doing it, i'm just trying to understand conceal carry law for my own benefit.

Maybe Richard can answer this question?

maybe, i'm sure it's not a huge deal in NM since oc is legal also however, in other states it's probably more frowned upon.

In some states, printing, inadvertent showing and brandishing may all be the same under the law as interpreted by the officer(s) on the scene.
In some states the word "intent" is inserted which can be subjective at best. In other states - they don't care one way or the other - citizen states "man with gun" and someone will go to jail.
In Minnesota we have a permit to carry a pistol. doesn't specify cc, oc or in between. I can also guarantee that if you oc in downtown Minneapolis - your day at the very least will be spent in many hours of questioning by the MPLS PD. In the county where I live the sheriff if gun friendly. Under state law they have 30 days for renewal but most people in my county have their new permit in 10-12 calendar days from request and we are the cheapest county in the state. MN allows the Sherriff to collect his cost not to exceed 100 for initial and 75 for renewal. Our county is 75 and 55.

Dez, Do you have to renew every 30 days?

but is printing, inadvertent brandishing? or showing? its still under a shirt. maybe i'm just splitting hairs. im currently just satisfying my own curiosity atm while i'm waiting on my Fla license to go through. I'm still going to mostly OC unless it's illegal where i'm going. which means I need to get that G19 soon. was also lookin at a nice little J frame as my everyday carry bug. A .357 as a bug is pretty sweet.

I believe Dez has it right, someone reports "man with a gun" and everything after is up to the Law and how they react to your demeanor and appearance. I would recommend buying your shirts in a larger size, with some sort of pattern. If you don't mind the noise, (they're loud), I've learned that Hawaiian shirts don't print well at all. Also, wear your pants up around your waist, though that's not always the style these days :D. I've been asked a few times but never detained, always keep it friendly you know? :D

ya, i'm gonna be driving from NM to SC in may is mainly why i ask. They arn't so OC friendly at all in the states in between here and there.

Some of those states are not carry friendly at all for non residents.

with a Fla resident license i'm good through the states i'm gonna be driving through.
All I can find are these links. Which are the actual laws.

Can not find an actual law about imprinting, though the NRA synopsis on NM laws does define concealed.
"Concealed handgun means a loaded handgun that is not visible to the ordinary observations of a reasonable person."
Now define "Ordinary Observation" and "Reasonable Person".
Here's a totally fictional example;
OO: Officer I noticed that guy had a gun.
LEO: What made you suspect this?
OO: I've been staring at him for 10 minutes, he looked kind of suspicious.
LEO: What's your name sir?
OO: Eric Holder.

How about not wearing a shirt that will imprint. When I went through my CC class our instructor told us then that if we are going to carry, we have to change the way we buy our clothes. We have to buy shirts bigger, pants a size larger if you IWB carry, ect.. I am more concerned about my shirt rising over the butt of the gun or something and not knowing. Just my views!

lol my issue is that fact that i own full sizes atm. i'm gonna get my wife a G19 but at the moment those are few and far between. so concealing a FS shows an imprint. no matter what the shirt looks like.

OK I can tell what has happened. As far as printing. In NM no big deal. Same in West Texas. I have flashed by accident in West Texas and had a local cop point it out in a friendly way. I usually tuck my shirt behind my gun while I am driving so the gun butt is exposed and had forgotten to pull it back when I got out to pump gas. He pulled up asked me to cover my weapon. Asked if I had a permit and nicely reminded me that open carry is not OK in Texas. In Dallas I am always careful. A lot depends on your age, and demeanor.

I have heard that if the average person can make out the shape of the gun then you can get in trouble with the law. Of course I heard in on the internet so that may or may not be true but sounds reasonable. Here in N.H. though we can open carry so I guess it doesn't really matter in my case. Also just to put it out there we have to renew our permit every 4 years, it is quick though I submitted my renewal paperwork monday or tuesday and received a call friday morning saying it was ready.

I think I remember from my concealed carry class that printing equals brandishing, depending on the LEO and the court. It is risky I would say...I would think that we should make every effort to avoid printing (not easy I know) as the intent in carrying concealed is so that no one knows or even suspects that you are carrying.

I think you are right Colt 45. In-printing in NM equals brandishing. I still am very conscious about making sure that my shirt doesn't rise above the butt of the gun.

With OC being legal in NM, as long as it is not illegal to open carry (where alcohol is sold like Wal-Mart) I'm not too worried with imprinting. When I'm somewhere CC is legal and OC isn't then I'm concerned with it. Of course I'm not a lawyer, but that's how I conduct myself.

Okay being new to CC and knowing I have about 4 months before I should expect my license get in. I could use some pointers on dressing. I know winter is much easier with the heavy clothing. Lets talk 100 degree summers. I am carrying a spare tire so I need pointers on how to deal with this.
Any help is appreciated (except loosing the spare tire LOL)

Do you plan on carrying your PT145? It's a great size for the summer. I use a CrossBreed Supertuck. I wear jean shorts with a belt, an undershirt and a T-Shirt over. It conceals very well and I didn't have to change my wardrobe much. I wear A-Shirts (wife beaters) now which I never used to wear before. I can carry my G-23, G-27, and my PT-145 with virtually no imprinting.

Yes that is the one I plan on carrying. I will switch out with my snub nose 38 at times. I was looking at the crossbreed and they do look pretty good. How are they holding up?

I've had mine a while and the older it gets the more comfortable it is to wear. I love them all.

I have a little Keltec PF9 that is super lightweight that I carry a lot in the summer. It goes well in the pocket or on the hip.
Our CC instructor weighed in on brandishing differently stating it was waving it around, removing it in public to show it off or using it as an intimidation method such as 'don't mess with me I have a gun' and then exposing it as to imply a threat.

the cliff notes for open carry and this is from my att.
when a carried weapon is readily identifiable to a reasonable person. so, if a cop walks up to you and asks why you are imprinting in nm tell him that your ocing since im sure officers are reasonable people according to the law and he readily identified it.
