This question is more for the board members from Otero County but if anyone else has an idea, please list it.
How many informal shooting ranges do we have in the Otero County area?
I am asking because the Sidney Paul Gordon Range is closed to the public on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Are there any good spots with a safe backstop, close enough to town that you don't have to drive an hour but far enough from people's homes that a little shooting won't disturb anyone?

I have shot at Dry Canyon but it has been a few years ago. Even further back (like 15 or more years) I used to shoot at an old gravel pit off the Old El Paso Highway. This spot was north of Taylor Ranch but south of Green Trail. Does anyone still shoot there? I saw that La Luz Canyon has been fenced off about a quarter mile east of the spillway so that shooting spot is gone now.
Has anyone shot recently at the gravel pit near Oliver Lee State Park? That area was the subject of some news coverage about people complaining of target shooters using the BLM lands for their recreation.
There used to be a 50 yard range that was built on city land off North Florida near the water tanks but I think this was fenced off and closed.

I do most of my shooting at the Sidney Paul Gordon Range but any time I shoot, especially on public lands, I always pack out my trash and leave nothing behind.

Any suggestions?

I have shot up in Dry Canyon before. Only because my day off usually falls on a Tuesday and the range is closed. I would perfer to use the Sidney Paul Gordon Range any day over the canyon.
