First off I'd like to say I'm generally a happy-go-luck/easy going guy. I don't want to sound like I'm always complaining. But what keeps me happy is getting stuff off my chest.
My son has recently been hired on as a police officer here in the local community (Alamogordo NM). He is young (only 20), but a great kid who made all the right decisions and stayed away from all the right (or wrong) people. He walks into a local gun store (We really only have oneish) asks the person behind the counter if he can see a Glock-22. He currently has a G-23 which I purchased for him. The gentleman (I use the term loosely) behind the counter asks him if he is 21. My son being honest answers no, but I'm law enforcement, he is unsure - as am I if this makes a difference. He is a commissioned officer btw. The gentleman asks someone else if that makes a difference and they promptly begin to make fun of him by saying "well I'm a pilot and I'm a firefighter" All that really needed to be said was that he had to be 21 to handle handguns in the store. I also would like to say that being law enforcement is more relevant to carrying/handling/purchasing a handgun then the professions of the other two behind the counter. I personally have been into the store and have been ignored for quite some time. I purchased my G-23 and my sons from Tularosa Trading Post. I was treated with respect and had all my questions answered without feeling like I was wasting his time. Why would a storefront that depends on local business to survive treat people any other way. If they (the original local gun store) believe my son will not have influence on more then a handful of people they are gravely mistaken. I ensure you and them I will advocate against doing business there to anyone who will listen. I'm positive I WILL affect their bottom line......

Is your son working for Alamogordo DPS? If so, PM me for the specific contact information he will need to make a department authorized purchase from a glock distributor. It will be as easy as asking one person upstairs for the form letter.
The glock distributors in New Mexico are Neve's in Albuquerque and Tina's Range Gear in Santa Fe. If he makes the purchase on a department authorization rather than having you do it, he can save between $80 and $120 on the gun depending on what configuration and sights he wants.
Glock offers a special deal for police officers and military that can only be done through their distributors. None of our local shops are currently distributors for Glock. Their volume is just too low and the requirements from Glock for the initial purchase would equal several months of sales locally.
Glock Inc. will sell their pistols to an authorized distributor for less than any local dealer can purchase them from Davidsons, G&T, or any of the other non-LE distributors.

I sent you a PM Chuck, thanks for the info. I was really venting about the way he and I have been treated in a local gun store, but thank you for your assistance none the less..

im pretty sure i know the store and they do act funny sometimes. it just depends on who's behind the counter that day. i'm sorry that they've acted the way that they have. i don't buy anything there besides the occasional box or 2 of 10mm range ammo.

It was pointed out that he has had a few weapons stolen over the winter from younger people. I'd like to point out that if customers weren't ignored it would be unlikely they could walk out without being noticed. This still doesn't excuse the condescending attitude toward my son and me and most likely others.

I get the same treatment there every time I am there. I would rather do business with James (Basin Firearms)(also a forum supporter) any day than them. I believe James is just a much better businessman than them. This is just MY opinion!!!

ya, that and their prices are a bit high on pretty much anything. but, i guess you could say that about anywhere at the moment. james does have a knack for finding a good deal though and i'd much rather support him that others in the area.

I'm waiting for a 9mm I purchased through James, and yes although I have not met him yet, we have only emailed and texted, I am positive it will be a good experience/purchase.

James is a great guy and good to do business with. You will enjoy dealing with him.
I will not go to the other store as I was treated the same way as you and your son.

I think I know what gun shop you are referring to, but I won't mention the name here. I have been appalled with their service -- or the lack thereof -- and haven't been back. There is a least one person who works behind the counter who is friendly and is always a help, but you never know when he is there. There are some other options, although in Alamogordo there isn't a shop with that much inventory.
If you travel to Las Cruces you should check out the Custom Cartridge Company, or even the Sportsmans Warehouse. I have had good luck at both places. In Alamo, you can check out The Gun Rack. I have purchased several handguns from Wyatt, but he doesn't have much in stock. He can order anything you want however, and after checking it out if you don't like it you don't have to buy it.
Good luck!

I have heard a few people complain about that place. I have been there about 7-8 times but only small stuff. I wasn't real happy with the service but not real bad either.

Sorry Colt, but Sportsmans has been closed for about a month now. Not a whole lot of choices left around here

Yeah I was afraid of that. I was by there today and there wasn't a single car in the lot.

Believe it or not, I feel better knowing my son and I weren't singled out by this lousy customer service. Thanks for all the response to this post....
