View Full Version : How to change the Hammer Spring
Anyone know how to change the hammer spring in a Charter Arms
.44 Bulldog?
I acquired a lighter spring and wish to try it out. I know it might
have a negative affect on reliability so I plan to test it thoroughly
before I carry it with the light spring.
So can anyone tell me how to change the spring?
Thanks!

Assuming these are your posts on the National Gun Forum:

Looks like you have already figured it out. I do feel your pain, having a gun that
bothers you or you do not trust is not a good thing. But before you remove the
Wolff spring, there are some easy things to try. Beg or borrow a few different
brands of primers. CCI's are a bit harder than most other brands. Load a few
cases with different brand primers, and nothing else. You will be popping the
primers only to find a brand that will play well with the weaker spring in double action.
This assumes you get the gun repaired and decide to stick with it a bit longer.
Yup, I'm the one in the other forum that asked about the Charter spring.
I found it is extremely easy to change the spring. In fact, it only takes about
5 minutes to accomplish.
I have already re-installed the factory spring and tested it at the range.
The lighter weight Wolff spring gave me misfires with all factory ammo and
all of my reloads with Federal or CCI or Winchester primers. So the Wolff
spring is out. Too bad it didn't work!
It just reinforces a lesson I learned back in the 70's when we were all carrying
Smith & Wesson revolvers: Don't mess with the hammer spring!
