For all of the friends I have made on this site I feel it is time to post my "Close Call".

While this part of the forum was meant primarily for close calls with bad guys, occasionally something comes along that falls in and out of scope.

I am 55 years young, retired US Special Forces and always had the attitude of being invincible. Well I have finally met something that kicked my butt very hard.

In late February 2009 during a routine physical my doctor finally convinced me to go and have the "first" Colonoscopy (Mid March) that I should have had five years ago. During the procedure three polyps were discovered and two were removed without incident. The third one was about 1 1/2" at the base and could not be removed without surgery. OK, so lets go do it.

I went in the hospital and had surgery on April 9 to have the polyp (http://www.concealcarrychat.com/forums/private.php?do=showpm&pmid=305) removed which required about a 3" piece of the Transverse Colon to be removed. Biopsy confirmed early stage Colon Cancer but they got it all so no further treatment would be necessary. OK - good so far!

The surgery (http://www.concealcarrychat.com/forums/private.php?do=showpm&pmid=305) seemed to have gone well but in the afternoon of day 7 at the hospital I very "suddenly crashed". I went from feeling great, sitting on the side of the bed talking to my wife and a Dr. into septic shock and a coma in a 10 minute period.

Basically over the 7 days after surgery my entire body had become poisoned from bowel (http://www.concealcarrychat.com/forums/private.php?do=showpm&pmid=305) leakage but had not given off the signs needed for early detection.

So now in late July after a 5 1/2 week stay in the hospital and another 6 weeks of being flat on my back at home I have enough strength to do small things.

I lost 54 pounds in the first 22 days from date of admission. I have now gained back about 30.

Still have a tremendous amount of pain to wit I found out last Friday I have a PereStomal Hernia (http://www.concealcarrychat.com/forums/private.php?do=showpm&pmid=305). Seems like every time I go to Dr. it is something new. JUST Once I would like to go and hear" you are doing better".

I know that Brandon and all of you have been in the dark and I appoligize for that. Sorry that I have not been on to update you sooner but I have been - for the most part drugged up to the point that I didn't remember my own name.

For those of you who have given me your thoughts and prayers, my family and I thank you.

As time allows me to heal I promise to once again become an active part of this very important site.

Again - Thanks and God Bless you all,

Steve (AKA Dez)

I am glad you are on the mend. It seems like these things just come out of nowhere, and everything changes. I've had my share of medical problems too, and they are not over yet. These problems came on a few years ago, when for all of my previous life I have been healthy and seldom needed to see a doctor.

Take it slow and we'll look forward to hearing from you whenever your are able.

well dez, i know I like to one up you. but, I don't have one for this. :)

good luck and be good. you are required to spend at least 40 more years alive, if you fail to meet that requirement I'm gonna be very disapointed in you.

Sounds like you could use some positive encouragement. A tragic medical event in my own past occurred when my wife was diagnosed with breast cancer. Fortunately, we encountered someone who had been through it all and really encouraged her. Long story short, she is now 12 years cancer free, and encourages others who face such a devastating diagnosis. Some of the more astute medical centers actually use a data base of those who have been there for counseling therapy for new patients. When you have this behind you and it is just so much water under the bridge, and it will be soon God willing, you may find yourself called upon to counsel others facing the same. Please do so, you will find it to seem strange but it is rewarding in so many ways to turn the personal experience towards helping others in their time of encouraging need.

Reading over the above, I did not explain that very well but the intent is there.

Well time for an update. Most of you notice that I have been jumping in on posts here and there. Been trying to put something out there for Jizzle to jump on but so far he isn't biting. LOL

Well as far as the health - I am comming along albiet a little slower than I would have liked.

Bad luck is continuing for 2010 though. In early February my Dad was diagnosed with terminal lung/liver/everywhere cancer. The Dr.'s gave him 6 months if the radiation worked.

Well My family and I just returned from OK Monday afternoon.

The 6 months didn't work. We arrive at the hospital at 4:55 PM from MN. and Dad passed at 8:02 PM on April 24, 2010. He was pretty coherent right up to the end and we had a good 3 hrs of talk and laughter. He went quickly so at least his pain is gone.

His Birthday was Tuesday May 4th so Tuesday evening we went out and had a Ribeye in his honor as this was his favorite cut.

Again thanks to all of you for your thoughts and prayers.
