My service time can't compare with most. I served one hitch in the Navy. 1979 to 1981. I served aboard the guided missile destroyer USS Kidd. DDG-993.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Kidd_(DDG-993)

I was a Gunner's Mate 2nd Class when I left. Worked on the MK26 Guided Missile Launcher.

And thanks to all who answered our nation's call serve.

74-2004, started pushing puppies in the PI and finished as a 1SG here at Holloman, with stretches in the FACP world, ETAC, and a Loggie.

I do not usually post on a topic like this. It is too easy to appear to be boasting or implying tall tales, which I do enough of already. So if I am interpreted as such, the real story is that I have had the good fortune of being assigned some of the most interesting and satisfying duties I could ever have wanted. Here is the thumbnail sketch:

USAF active duty 1970 - 1983, Captain, fun and various duties. I think the 3 years as a Satellite Operations Controller at Vandenburg was the most fun, and the most rewarding.
(Controller Certification was from Philco-Ford Aerospace)

US Army contractor 1983 - 1985 HELSTF MIRACL developmental support and IOC, ref:

http://www.globalsecurity.org/space/systems/miracl.htm

USAF Civilian test engineer 1985-2003, fun and various duties. I think the 3 years detailed as the last civilian "blue-suit" manager for RAMS Site was the most fun and rewarding.

Last page, page 11:

engr. consultant for Bell Aerospace and Rocketdyne 1986-87 time frame. Ceased such efforts when the USAF decided this was a conflict of interest with my official duties. (It was approved initially by the legal folks
when I started that hobby)

Total service time = 34 years, however the 3 years of Army contractor time was not included. Thus officially, I have 31 years on the retirement docket.

USAF 25 years, I retired as a MSgt. I began my career at MacDill AFB, Fl and ended it at Holloman AFB. I was stationed at many bases around the world in aircraft maintenance. I started in WCS on F4s and ended as Pro Super on F117s. In between I worked F15s, F16s, and F111s. I enjoyed the people, the places, and the work, I must have I stayed half my life? Thanks to all who have served, are serving, and will serve.

What was your favorite assignment if you don't mind me asking?

What was your favorite assignment if you don't mind me asking?

I think that I would have to say that my favorite assignment was my last one before retiring. I worked for Alaskan Air Command as the Liaison to the Engineering Division of Air Force Systems Command. I was stationed at Hanscom Air Force Base in Bedford, Massachusetts.

The reason that this was my favorite assignment is that I learned a great deal about Systems Acquisition which led me to getting a job as a System Safety Engineer with General Electric in Syracuse, NY when I retired.

This then led to a 25 year career as a System Safety Engineer in the Defense Industry.

US Navy for 10 years. 85 to 95. was stationed in Rota Spain as an aircraft mechanic to the EP3A and the A-3 SkyWarrior (AKA The Whale). Last Tour was aboard the USS John F Kennedy (CV-67) where I left with the rank of Second Class Petty Officer. I have to say Rota was my best tour from what I can remember. I even ran with a bull (and I was sober too) in De Arcos.

5+ years in the US NAVY as an Air Traffic Controller at the Patuxent River Naval Air Test Center. Begged to go to sea but they wanted me elsewhere. When reenlistment came up, I was tossed up between AC2 pay of just over 11k a year or FAA pay for same job at 100k+. Decision was easy but only because of pay! The Navy has some of the most professional individuals I have ever worked with. Biggest asset is the camaraderie and team-work ethic! FAA isn't even close. Thank you to all whom serve, past, present and future! We would not be as fortunate as we are without you all. CS

USAF for just over four years, Feb 89-May 93. Ended up as a TACP and got a 6 month "trip" to the persion gulf. Aug 90-Apr 91. Spent my last 18 months in Germany. The small carear field made for a lot of close friends, but pretty hard to get promoted. Air Force stationed with the Army made for intersting times ( kinda like playing mom against dad, sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't) Unfortunately for me I lost contact with some of my best friends have been trying to hook back up with them ever since. I miss the good friends and the good times, would go back again if I could but unfortunately for me Uncle Sam says that I am already too old. Guess I will just have to remenince on the "Days gone by"
