Last night we went to the annual Christmas party at our apartment complex. They always have a drawing for prizes. This year there were 4 $25 prizes and one $200 prize. I had joked to everyone that I was going to win the $200 prize. Well, to my surprise I did!
So, I thought I would pick up some ammo if I could find anything I was looking for. We stopped in at the Walmart here on Valley Drive (Las Cruces). They had some Winchester .22LR ammo in 500 ct boxes and some shotgun shells that I was interested in. Now, the last time I was at this particular Walmart the limit on ammo purchases was 5 boxes. I told the guy I would take 2 boxes of the .22, and before I could say anything else he said "no". He said I could only have one box of ammo.
I told him if that was the rule that was fine with me. As I was checking out, he said that people were coming in and buying everything he had as soon as he got it on the shelf and then re-selling it at gun shows for a lot more money. He also said that the government is requiring the ammo manufacturers -- Olin, Remington and Federal -- that they could only manufacture ammo for the general public one day a week, and the remaining production was for the government.
This is the first that I had heard of this. Has anyone else heard of this?

I will be going to Walmart tomorrow, I will check it out. It doesn't sound right.
Lets make this one real simple.
The guy spends too much time in the liquor and fantasy book sections.
Average year private citizens in teh US buy 7 billion rounds. So far this year they have bought 12. Factories are not going to expand and go bankrupt like thy did last time it happened.
Wild stories don't help much at all.
Wish the Bozo at the Great wall of China Mart would just shut up.

Yeah I thought it was pretty far out. This is the first story I have heard from a Walmart associate, but I have heard others from other people. Anyway, I don't know if the "1 box" per customer rule is unique at this particular Walmart or not. I'll stop in to the other one and ask then what their policy is.

The Walmart here in Ruidoso tried a while back to limit you to 3 boxes per customer. Someone complained and they were told that in NM you cannot place a limit on purchases at regular prices. You can now buy all the ammo you can afford if they have it!

I went to the Walmart here in Alamo and the shelves where pretty clean. They did have one box of 100 .40 cal FMJ for $30. Thought this was a good price. Then I asked the guy about limitations and he said there were none. He said the other day a guy came in and bought $700 worth of ammo. This must be the reason the shelves where so clean!

It must be that the rules for ammo vary from store to store. It must be the individual department managers, or worse yet, the associates making up the rules as they go. I think I'm just going to make a big order online and avoid the Walmart hassle.
Thanks Bman for the report!

Anybody making book on who bought $700 worth of ammo? (that $25-$40 a box stuff adds up real quick) or who regularly buys 6-700 worth?

They say they are buying it and taking it to gun shows and doubling their money. This is why shelves are so empty everywhere.
I think "they" are not accurate.

when wal mart limits the number of boxes of ammo or anything else you can bet it is the store manager or dept manager that has placed the limit, and not the government or the wal mart HQ cause I have notice it depends on those who run the store, we were told all wal marts wouldnt be selling rifles anymore a couple years back, and the 3 walmarts around only one has quit sells rifles and shotguns but they were selling muzzaloaders this year, it was only after that store got a new manager who is not a 2nd ammendment surporter.the other 2 walmarts still sell rifles and shotguns, so in my opinon it is the store managers and the dept managers who place the limits on how much you can buy of any given iitem.

In Spring Hill, FL.
The WM on SR19, would not sell me 2 boxes of 45acp, that was under the counter. They were reserved for another person.
So, I asked if I could reserve a few boxers from the next shipment. NO!
Called the boss, he didn't have time to discuss the ammo problem.
At $35.00 a box of 50, white box WW, that's BS. No longer a WM customer.
Most of my extended family, stopped going there also.
Not a dent in thier sales, just satisfaction of not going there anymore.
blackshark,
Just remember to tell them why you don't shop there.
Matter of fact make sure you tell the HQ, they do want to know.
I think we should all contact the Walmart Corporation (http://walmartstores.com/contactus/feedback.aspx) and tell em' we're sick of the lackadaisical inventory control regarding ammo. Can't tell me they don't have the clout to get a few boxes in from time to time. As well the selective selling and reserving sounds like a lawsuit waiting to happen.
Hmmmm... I will commend ol' Wally World as I had a personal reply to my letter in less than an hour. That was not expected at all. Still have no ammo... lol.

I just left a gun show in OKC, OK. and found the same ammo WM sells at the same price or cheaper.

I was at Walmart this morning looking for some 9mm ammo and nothing! They did have a few boxes of .40 cal, but that was it.

I have not seen any type of .45 ammo there in more then six months. Was able to pick up a box of 9 mm a couple of months ago. I sure hope all of this ammo hording comes to an end soon. Maybe a big upset in November will do it.

I haven't seen any 45 auto ammo there in a long time either, but once in a while they have some .40 S&W and even 9mm, but it's rare.

What I have seen from Wal-Mart stock is the aka "cop round" .40 S&W is about all they will "display", along with a few varity counts of .22 and bird shot 12 & 20 ga.
You will not see a certain pratice at Wal-Mart because they are more discreet than local small gun shops. The reason I say is I was in a local gun store at the time back when there were no rounds of certain calibers to be found much of anywhere.
I was looking for some 7.62x39 which was the most scarce around here at that time, when a guy walks in a asks for any .380 and the owner of the shop tells him, "Man this is my last box." he gladly buys the 50 count of PMC fmj for a outrageous mark-up and heads out.
I was about to leave after looking around another 5 mins when another guy came in and asked if they had any .380's, some other customer like me spoke up and stated that he just sold his last box. Then the owner ambles over and told him that he would check in the back then comes out and said, "Man this must be your lucky day" as he sold it like the first at inflated prices and claiming this to be the Quote "last box" I'm sure this went on and on but it was enough for me.
Back to Wal-Mart, I know for a fact that there is insider trading going on in reference to ammo, if you know someone you can get all the rounds of whatever you desire but if not, your scratching and clawing for the "last or limited box" if not being turned away altogether. Wal-Mart and the world itself has changed so much in the past 20yrs. and not for the better!

I agree also. Unfortunately some people confuse greed with good business practices. So the more money they make no matter how is being a good business man.

I'm sure this is NOT a wide spread practice, at least I hope not but the mark-up on anything gun related has been on the rise as everone knows.
I only practice shoot or plink at a minimum compared to years past due to this arguous inflation and that is sad times for me!
