I have a friend who has a Springfield Armory XD .357 SIG. At 29 oz. I believe it is too bulky and heavy for concealed carry. I think it would be great if you can get one in a sub-compact. Here are the specs. I really would like to own this gun! What are your thoughts?

Don't care for tem myself, even in the compact version they are bulky and like all of the new breed are striker fired and trigger $#!^^y.
As for weight, the heavier the better, ever see shooting discipline with a minumum weight?.
Life's to short to live with ugly guns.

I wouldn't want to offend anyone by saying that these black guns are ugly, but they really can't compete with the sleek sexiness of a 1911. Even so, in the interest of full disclosure I do own a couple of Glocks and a clone.

It looks like the XD is about the same size as a Glock 19. If so, there are those who do conceal it. Of course, only you know what works for you.

I have no comment on the gun. The caliber comes from the 40 S&W necked down to take a 9mm bullet (thus should be named the 355 instead of 357). I will not reload for the 40 nor for any round that derives from it. The next negative I have for it is the bottleneck is too short for proper bullet grip to resist setback. I think the rule of thumb there is that a bullet grip area should be on the order of one caliber diameter or larger. The final negative would be that any pistol cartridge with a typical rifle bottle neck adds the steps necessary for bottle necks. Namely, the need to lube the case to resize it. I tend to shoot rifle cartridges in pistols, so lubing and resizing is an extra effort I do not mind for those beefy cartridges. Why I would want to do that for a tiny pistol cartridge does not compute. Extra pain for no gain ?

You got it.
The SIG round almost equals my 38 Super loads from the compact and the Super is made in a nice sleek metal pistol.

I'd like a 10MM from Springfield in slab side or plastic. I like 10mm. I wouldn't have the 357 unless it was given to me...and I'd promptly and gladly trade it for a case of .40 ammo...so sue me

I also agree that life is to short for ugly guns, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder...and well I like my XD's :D

I also like the style the XD as well as the Glock. I think my next handgun will be an XD. Not sure which, but an XD for sure.

357 sig is an even more bastardized round than the 10mm.

What about the 357 sig ammo do you like?

Actually the .40 s&w is the bastard round/cartridge, while the bullet is the same size for both the terminal ballistics for a 10mm run close to those for the .45. Those wimpy FBI agents and other LE agencies that didn't like the "snap" of the 10mm got it cooked down to the .40  In any event I'd rather carry a fist full of .40 than a hand full of .357.

The perfect handgun is by far the .45 in my book...I'm just to small to carry one with 15 rounds, and not have it show...:D
Then again; "if I knew I was going to a gunfight I'd carry a rifle"

I was told that the .357 round is good for carrying while backpacking. It is a good round against bear and cougar. I used to own a .357 revolver and it kicked like a mule!

The "real' 357 is a good packer, The SIG much less so.
The 357 SIG only comes with 125 gr bullets in factory ammo.
That is hardly the most effective loading for that bore dia, and nothing like what you can expect from a 'real' 357.
Admittedly the factories have downloaded the 357 a lot but the 357 SIG still doesn't have it.

In real 357 loads you can get the same speeds with 158/160 that the SIG barely makes with 125's.

Ah, good to know. Thanks Sam.
