I have been thinking of getting a little .22 to play around with. Something more affordable to shoot to be honest. Ha. I have been looking at the Walther P22. Anyone have ant suggestions?

Well if you dont have a 10/22 already then I suggest that. I have one and
I love it big time. I know they have those new "tactical" AR looking .22 rifles
but I rather buy a 10/22 and dress it up if its gonna be cheaper. Just what I
think.

I am looking for a pistol rather than the riffle. I have a riffle already in a .22.

I found one of these on gunbroker for $250. Not a bad price for slightly used firearm. Anyone have any luck with these? Recommendations maybe?

the p22 is nice, what exactly do you want to do with your .22 handgun? just have fun? because the p22 isn't super accurate, the barrel is rather short. I like the ruger mark III for plinking.. you can't go wrong with it. it's super accurate and hasn't ever given me an issue. And from what I remember they aren't very expensive.

Thanks Jizzle, I will check it out. I am looking for a plinking gun that isn't too big. I liked this one because it is something that CAN be carried. Not saying I ever would. But it could.

true. its possible. but for a BUG it's a bit big and the caliber in my humble opinion isn't good for a primary UNLESS that's all you had access to.

I'll second the Mark III. I have one, and the only issue is the dis-assembly and reassembly, at least until you get the hang of it. Not that it is hard, but it's easy to mess one part up and then the bolt is locked up. It happened to me, and I had a devil of a time getting it right. Now that I understand what is going on there, even if it did happen again I know how to remedy it easily.
I have a Smith & Wesson K-22 Masterpiece that I have had for years, and I have had a lot of fun with it. Jizzle and Sinclair have fired it. It is very accurate and rugged. But, it is a revolver. I'm not sure that you want to go that route. I don't know either if they make them anymore or not but you should be able to find them used pretty easily.
Another revolver I would recommend is the Ruger Single Six. I had one of those also, and sold it when I got my Peacemaker in .22 LR. I wish I would have kept it.
I was eying the Walther last year before Sportsman's Warehouse went out. I was pretty close to buying it...

I've got a Ruger Mark ll. It's the 22/45 version with a slab side barrel. Very accurate and fun to shoot. Of course, the Browning's have achieved cult status, still I am very satisfied with the Ruger. And yes, reassembly means having to learn a new dance, but it's not too difficult as long as you read the instructions while you are doing it.

I have always liked my Ruger Mark II. Shoots great and has excellent Balance. I have a friend that owns a Buckmark like Colts 45 but blue finish. Both are excellent choices. I prefer the Ruger cause it is the one I own.

Buying 22 long rifle in bulk paks is very economical if you are not a re-loader. That part is a must if you wish to enjoy shooting on a better budget. You say you have a 22 rifle already. So why buy anything else ?
If you must have a pistol, be aware that you are seriously compromising the ballistics of a light bullet with barely supersonic capability in a carbine length rifle. If you must also have an automatic, the 22 rimfire case is not designed to feed well in auto mode. Actually, I said that wrong. Rimless cases were so designed to avoid feeding problems in automatics. Even so, several firearms have been engineered over the years to perform acceptably with the rimmed 22 case. The better ones have already been recommended in here. It has been my experience that for generic every-brand ammo, the Ruger 10/22 action is the best all around performer. Now available in a pistol form:

with a .22 i doubt many people are worried about the ballistics of it. at least not many that i know of personally.. it`s a .22.... shoot it like you stole it.. lol.
If you want something nice hunt around and find a S&W M63 or M34.
You'll never own a nicer handgun , light enough to pack, heavy enough to shoot and accurate enough to keep the pot very full (if you can shoot) adn absolutely nothing better in teh world to learn on either. You'll find out what a good trigger really is.

Before Sportsman's Warehouse went out of business here in Cruces they had a S&W model 63. I thought about buying it and am sorry I didn't. It would make a great plinking gun!

A lot of good suggestions here. My thoughts on the P22 is that it would act as a training gun. One that I could go to the range with and do lots of draw and fire drills and shoot it like I stole it (nice Jizzle).
I think if you are serious about using it as a trainer, you won't be very happy.
The thing is made of zinc, not very durable and I suspect that after 5000 rounds you'll be able to throw 22lr ammo better than you can shoot the P22

If you are sure about the P22, you might consider reviewing the following long discussion of it.

Yes, this pistol has antenna grade steel for a barrel! I purchased one when they was first out on the market several years ago and loved it at first.
I shot it about 500 or less times in one day, then I go to clean it (very fouled but never a problem) I looked down the barrel because I could'nt get a wore-out brush through!
Ah! behold the barrel was so slathered inside with lead there was no-way to resolve this except to get another barrel! and I did but it came by swapping it for an old Targa which I gladly did.
I love the Browning Buckmark, I like the smooth action and more ergo feel than the Ruger Mark series but just about any .22 is a better choice than the Walther, heck I even have a 26 year old Jennings thats still in better shape.
Sorry to break it to you like this Bman.

Hey if you want to sometime lets get together and you can try out my Ruger and Smith & Wesson if you think you may be interested in something like that. My feelings would not be hurt if you are not, but I am making the offer in case you are interested. Perhaps some others who live close by can do the same with their favorite .22 pistols.

What is the big difference between 22LR and 22 WinMag ammo?
MasterBlaster
01-24-2010, 09:10 PM
The .22 WMR is encased, crimped and ballistically far superior due to the fact they are almost double in velocity and triple in energy in the same grain of bullet weight, not to mention the trajectory is a 1/3 or less at 100 yds.

Besides price, bullet design, bullet weight, and bullet velocity, can't think of much. Well, there is the parallel between the 22 WMR being almost identical to the center fire 5.7 X 28 FN round.
