WYTHEVILLE, Va. —
An armed man in a wheelchair took five people hostage Wednesday at a post office in a small, rural town, forcing officials to cordon off a three-block area of a downtown filled with holiday shoppers.

Shots were fired, but there were no reports of injuries. The man made no demands other than to ask for a pizza, said Pete Rendina, spokesman for the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.

Rendina said the man was in a wheelchair and missing part of his leg, but he had no other information. Postal inspectors from Roanoke and Charleston, West Virginia, were at the scene.

Virginia State Police sent in a special weapons and tactics team and a bomb technician. Police at the scene told the Wytheville Enterprise the man had five pounds of a common plastic explosive strapped to his chest. State police spokeswoman Corinne Geller would not confirm that.

Susan Holman, manager of a store across the street, said officers told employees to leave the building because there was a man with explosives in the post office.

"The officer told us the man had enough explosives to take out the whole block," Holman told the Enterprise.

Mayor Trent Crewe told The Associated Press five hostages were in the building, including three employees and two customers.

Postal worker Walt Korndoerfer said he was in the post office when he heard shots and a co-worker ran past. He called police and then ran himself.

"You hear a shot, you get out," Korndoerfer told The Roanoke Times.

Town Manager Wayne Sutherland, speaking from his office four blocks from the scene, said dozens of officers had circled the freestanding, brick post office.

"It's completely surrounded by police in every direction," Sutherland said. "All I can see is blue lights."

Sutherland said the streets of the town of 8,500 were filled with holiday shoppers.

"It's Christmas and all the stores are busy," he said.

But it shows how supposed "gun-free" zones are not necessarily gun-free. The law-abiding are sheep waiting to be slaughtered.

No such thing as a "gun free zone". My job takes me into schools (no I do not carry into schools) and I really do not feel safe there, even with a resource officer on campus. I feel safest at the local gun shops for obvious reasons. Law makers need to understand that bad guys can't read. Or rather they interpret the signs different than the law abiding.

i have accidentally carried into the airport all the way up to the security checkpoint before realizing that I forgot to check it in my checked baggage.

I think it is legal to carry all the way to the checkpoint. After that, of course it's a different matter. Of course, at the security checkpoint is not the place to disarm and stow it. What I have done is taken or picked people up at the airport and carried inside.

It IS leagal to carry in the airport provided you are not going through the security checkpoint. This was taught in my CCW class and confirmed by my step mom who works TSA at the airport back home.

Scooter,
ever been to Houston Intercontinental?

Be careful what you tell folks. Even mom probably doesn't know since her jurisdiction ends at the checkpoint most places.

Thats the thing.. Every state is different. Which sucks.

It does and it doesn't. I wouldn't want the Federal Government to step in and control everything. It's inconvenient yes but we have to do the research when we travel with guns.

i don't mind having states that have different laws concerning different things but seriously there is no continuity at all.

Sam you are correct...partially. I wasn't entirerly clear in how I wrote that and you have made that clear to me now.

First, at the El Paso airport, if you have a CC permit honored in Texas, you are good to carry into the ariport just not through security.

Second, what my mom had stated as TSA is that provided state law allows it, you can carry in the airport provided you are not going through security. And for the record, her jurisdicition is from the checkpoint to the boarding gate. She is a manager with TSA and a profiler. TSA jurisdiciton is everything beyond the checkpoint.

So yes, I was unclear in what I stated. I spoke generally as many on the people on here I know and know that they are from around the same area as I. When speaking of "the airport" I automatically though of El Paso. So please everyone, check your local laws. And remember that just because you read something online, doesn't make it the law.

Anyone on here can be mistaken, misinfomred, or just plain wrong for whatever the reason.

I fall into the category of just plain wrong for whatever the reason.

Don't take it personal
Just making sure that the world doesn't take all here as gospel.
I travel a lot, haul firearms with me everywhere I go. Different rules every place.

Even TSA can't keep their rules straight from 1 airport to the next, badly enough that I now UPS my guns to the far end. Tired of playing with the underwear inspectors

Like you said TSA jurisdiction stops at the checkpoint but there are plenty of other issues before you get to the checkpoint. Even a pain for Feds, on BOTH sides of the checkpoint.

Check the local and state laws first.

Didn't take it personal at all. You made me realize that what I wrote initially wasn't very clear. And a word to the wise from what I've learned. UPS may not be the way to ship your guns. They've had huge problems with theft of firearms by employees. I know three FFL dealers who won't use them anymore because of "lost" firearms. FEDEX is there choice now, even if it does cost a bit more.
